Crossfit 1229 (Crossfit Makati)

This box offers their own Workout of the Day (WOD) and Bootcamp sessions. The workout changes everyday for both types of classes, and there are usually monthly or quarterly goals on which these workouts are founded. For those new to crossfit, WOD incorporates more use of weights and other equipment, and also gymnastics. On the other hand, Bootcamp works with more bodyweight exercises and some equipment (such as kettlebells) and will give you a bit more of a cardio workout. They have a Fundamentals class which you can avail with their beginner’s package, which is important to get the form right and will help prep your body for the full-range motions and high reps.

The box is along Gamboa Street in Legazpi Village, Makati. It’s right across Washington Sycip Park, and a short walk from Greenbelt.

Bring your own water bottles, or you can opt to buy at the box. They have a spacious lounge and locker rooms where you can store your belongings, but bring your own padlocks. They also have showers.

For WOD sessions, the drop-in rate is P750, and regular packages are P5,250 for 10 sessions and P6,250 for one month unlimited classes. For Bootcamp, drop-in costs P500, and regular packages cost P3,750 for 10 sessions and P4,750 for one month unlimited. Personal training sessions are also available at P2,500 per session. They have a beginners package which costs P4,500 and includes six WOD and six Bootcamp classes, and Fundamentals classes.

I’ve taken one of their morning classes (with Coach Nathan!), and I liked that it wasn’t so packed which meant I had more space to work with and the coach pretty much had eyes on everyone. This is a spacious box and the lounge on the mezzanine is clean and well maintained. The workout itself gave me sore arms for days (pull up negatives ‘til you die). The people here also weren’t intimidating at all -- everyone was extremely friendly, and it’s not hard to see why people would come back for the sense of community that it provides. It’s important though that you always do the workouts as is appropriate to your fitness level. Don’t feel like you have to do the number of reps that the coach gives, and try to ease into the workout. Take extra time to cool down after the class if you need it.
